2012 SUMC: Southeast Urban Music Conference

The Southeast Urban Music Conference is back in its 9th year!  Radio and record legends, some of today’s top on-air radio personalities, major record label, promotions & marketing specialists, producers, distributors, publishers, executives, and new recording artists will all be flocking to Charlotte, North Carolina April 26th-28th.  Featuring all genres of urban music—Jazz, Blues, Hip-Hop, Gospel, Neo-soul, R&B, and everything in between, while merging branding & marketing strategies and new technologies with the principles of the radio/record industry the 9th annual SUMC will be the best yet!

The 1st annual SUMC was held in 2004.  Combining the elements of retail, radio, and marketing, live performances, and networking opportunities with an educational component to boot. Radio personality, sales & marketing guru, magazine publisher, and entrepreneur Tony Baraka conceptualized the SUMC as a result of an event he created to reach ASCAP’s members, songwriters and performers.  Since it’s beginning the SUMC has drawn more celebrated performers, a variety of music industry professionals and larger crowds.

This year the SUMC gives students of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) a face-to-face and hands on experience and introduction to the Urban entertainment and music industries.  Tony Baraka, Allen Johnston, and their radio partners Black University Radio Network, Black College Radio Today, and the Living Legends Foundation have incorporated their first SUMC-HBCU Internship Program into the 2012 SUMC.

The 2012 SUMC-HBCU Internship Program provides students with a cutting edge, technologically sophisticated approach to all aspects of organizing a world class music conference. Interns will conduct interviews with industry VIPs for archiving within the Living Legends Foundation, develop media databases, assist with the implementation of branding & marketing strategies, create radio spots and audio & video productions, film interviews, and write articles, press releases, news stories, and biographies. College credit will be given for the successful completion of the internship program.”
